1979 Churchrock Uranium Spill

On July 16, 1979, a United Nuclear Corporation tailings dam failed, releasing radioactive uranium tailings and millions of gallons of contaminated wastewater into the Rio Puerco. The spill affected communities downstream and remains a major legacy of uranium mining in the region.
