ABOUT NEW MEXICO MINING WATCH

New Mexico Mining Watch

New Mexico Mining Watch is a state-wide coalition of groups and individuals organized to watchdog mining permitting, exploration, operations, reclamation and remediation in New Mexico and to actively address mining policy and regulation reform based on shared values and vision.

OUR HISTORY

NM Mining Watch History

2000

NM Mining Watch’s predecessor, the NM Mining Act Network (NMMAN) served since 2000 as a statewide advocate for protection of communities’ land, air and water affected by mining; enforcement of the NM Mining Act and other mining-related environmental protection laws; and promotion of economic alternatives for mining-impacted communities.

25 YEARS

For 25 years, NMMAN gave voice to marginalized communities and natural resources that are routinely silenced and degraded by corporate interests. NMMAN defended frontline communities and water quality in proceedings before the Mining Commission on financial assurance rules, before the Water Quality Control Commission on the Copper Rule, and on specific mining proposals, such as reclamation planning and permitting for the Questa, Chino, Cobre and Tyrone mines.

2025

In 2025, NMMAN expanded and diversified its focus to include additional frontline communities working on uranium mining. The coalition was renamed to New Mexico Mining Watch at that time.

JUSTICE, EQUITY & DIVERSITY

Justice, Equity & Diversity

New Mexico Mining Watch is rooted in the experience of frontline communities living near active and abandoned mines across the state.

As an organization we are committed to achieving our mission in a just, equitable, fair and transparent manner. We pledge to continue to increase access to all underserved communities in our organization and work. We commit to continuous improvement in the implementation of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion principles in our organization and work in order to protect our environment, address the climate crisis, and create healthy communities for everyone.
